I've got two dual-stage switches set up by CPF member goldserve back in spring of '05. They had both been in Q-III's but saw little actual use. The pattern is OFF-LOW-OFF-HIGH-OFF (loop pattern). The two resistors in parallel on each board read "R010" for a 5ohm value. I can't give you solid numbers to relate the difference in brightness, but it's quite significant to my eye. While it's not the most efficient manner to dim the light, you will still get an increase in runtime on low. Again, I can't supply solid data for runtime savings.
This is a simple five minute drop-in mod that can increase the usefulness, and breath some new life into your Q-III.
