I believe you can tell by the output #'s and runtime. The new CREE version has 10 lumens and 65 lumens of output, while the older one was 1.1lumen and around 40 lumens(I think). Also the new CREE version has MUCH greater runtime, around 1.5 hours on high, 10 hours on low.

I just bought an L1 (cree) from optics HQ. You cant go wrong there, check it out. Call them, they are easy to deal with.

Quite easy to tell the difference from outside: L1 CREE is shorter and the clip's edge falls well outside the marking 'L1 Digital' while the old one is longer and the clip ends over the marking.
