Hello,

i really want a ~1000 lumen Mag mod with at least half an hour of run time. But problem is, that I live in Lithuania, so i need very cheap shipping of parts.

So i want to ask - is there any mod i can do with what i can find on Dealextreme and Kaidomain?

thanks!

I was thinking:

i take this Mag 3D (is this is some fake Mag model?) - 34$:
http://www.kaidomain.com/WEBUI/ProductDetail.aspx?TranID=3914

I take 3 of these 3AA to 1D adapters 5$:
http://www.kaidomain.com/WEBUI/ProductDetail.aspx?TranID=3294

I take this MOP aluminum reflector 15$:
http://www.kaidomain.com/WEBUI/ProductDetail.aspx?TranID=3793

I take this bipin bulb 5$:
http://www.kaidomain.com/WEBUI/ProductDetail.aspx?TranID=3990

I take this socket 10$:
http://www.kaidomain.com/WEBUI/ProductDetail.aspx?TranID=3076

Aaaand i should get something like 750 lumens with something like 1hour of runtime? Correct or wrong?

I'm kind of thinking about a similar 6-AA mod to my old Fulton crimp neck.

Question:
Would the OEM lens melt from the heat?

i'm more interested in how to put a bit more power to my bulb, or perhaps use a different bulb? as for lens i think there are some in KD aswell.

also, can i use that mag or should i buy a real one?

I'm no expert at this, but AFAIK:

That mag looks real to me. If someone was doing knockoffs, I'd expect they'd at least charge less for it.

Don't forget to factor in good batteries and a charger. I don't think your average off the shelf NiMH will put out that much current. http://www.cheapbatterypacks.com/ seems to be a good source for high-current batteries.

i think the older ones came in a box (please correct me if im wrong)

Everything seems fine just do some resistance mods on the switch and the spring and it should be al sweet

Also you can get more lumens using a wa1185 (mag 85 mod)
only issue you might have is instaflash

You could also do a mag2c ROP-H mod
might be a little cheaper also

whats a resistance mod?

i'm really just a beginner with this, so i want it as simple as possible..

for example, 9AA's only make like 10.8v, so it's not quite enough to drive KD bulb at full 880l strength? but 12AA's is already way too much?

as for 2C, what batteries should i use?

did i select correct components at all?

I am driving my Mag85 with a three of AW's "C" cells and a tube extender. I would go that route with those or 18650's over those AA to D adapters. There will be a lot of internal resistance to overcome in that design, the springs need to be soldered to their anchor points, the positive to negative connections from cell to cell are a spot for loss, Just not good for a high current application IMO.

3 Lithium cells will have a nominal 12 volt off the charger but the voltage sag is enough to prevent instaflash. With 18650's some brands may shut off due to the high current draw and need a second click of the switch to fire.

Now if you want to push things, I put a 20 watt 12 volt MR16 lamp assembly in a mag and drive it with 12 AA NIMH cells. Big hot spot and great flood and bright. I have used this through three or four charge cycles and the original lamp is still running.

hmm, i want brightest i can get while still keeping at the very least 30 minute run time..

if i need to go lithium C/D way, then this adds a lot to the total price :(

Depends on the batteries
i just brought some cheap stuff from DX
Charger = http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4151
Batteries = http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.1879

I dont know how they would go with the high amp draw
(i only got them to play with)
To hold the batteries in a C Cell just use some pvc pipe as a big washer to even out the space inside so the batteries done flow around

its almost the same price as the 3AA to 1D plus you get charger

that DOES look nice, but i'm looking for something bigger with a bit more power. ideally, i'd want 3D size mod.. 4D is already a tad too big, but i can settle with that aswell, if it needs be..

Fair enough
i just got some AW globes about 30 mins ago (6V 30W)
Here is Lux's Data Sheet

I ran it in a 3d mag with enloops + 9AA to 3D converter
and it was nice, had a good hotspot cant test propley till it gets dark
mayb this mayb an option ?
