There is a new 5 mode Q5 for P60/P90 Surefires on ebay. It is going for $24.99 plus $3 shipping. Listing# 120198928643 is an example. Has anyone tried this yet? Of course, it doesn't list who manufacturers it or what the output, or runtime, of the different levels are. I am looking for a multi-level Q5 that will run in a 9V Surefire C3 and haven't found much available. Most of the multi-level drop-ins seem to run on 6V or less.

Well, the advertisement can't decide if it's a Q5 Cree or a Seoul P4. That's not a good sign. The next sign is that the operating current is about 600 mA, while the BOG is at 950 and Malkoff is somewhere around 1000.

Probably not anywhere near 270 lumens (note the max next to it.) My guess? More like 150.

Also, the BOG Q5 has a much deeper reflector (no need for a spring) and the Malkoff makes full use of it's space. Malkoff and the BOG also have good warranties behind them.

Yes, I saw both of those "issues". I think a lot of sellers on ebay just copy another's auction listing and change a couple of things so its not an exact copy. I bet it is a Q5 since the actual drop-in has Q5 printed on it. The mA of output is questionable though. It looks like a crap shoot but I just can't find any other Q5 drop-ins that offer multiple modes/levels and will work on 9V.

Save you money and give it a month, you'll see at least 3 of the top drop in's deliver on a multi mode Q5. Don't take part in the Ebay crapshoot! I'm thinking Gene will be first.

I have noticed the Q4 and Q5 have voltage range from 3-9 volts. Most adds mention the 6P but not the 9P. I have a malkoff M60 on the way. Will a 9P on primaries fry these modules?

You could always use a pair of 17500 or (maybe) 18500 cells in there instead and get longer rechargeable runtime in the same package...

I have only seen the one mentioned in my OP that specifically states will go to 9V and is multi-mode. If I were you, I would not assume any drop-ins will accept 9V unless specifically stated by the seller/manufacturer.

I have two choices as of today, which is to either buy the one on ebay or to scrap the C3 idea and put a quality drop-in into a C2. I have two C2's that should be at my door within the next day or two and I will be comparing the feel of the C2 against the C3. With the C3 I should get (obviously) better run-time but the availability of quality drop-ins and the ability/ease of carry of the C2 may outweigh the run-time advantage of the C3. As the light will not be an EDC, but rather mainly a "glovebox" light that can be carried if needed, the size doesn't make that much of a difference. I'm sure that someone will come out with a 9V multi-mode Q5 at some point.

The description appears to mention 9 volts but does not mention a 9P.

Malkoff

"This is the Malkoff Devices P60 style dropin with solid brass heatsink construction. It was designed specifically for use in SureFire 6P, 6Z, C2, M2 and G2 flashlights. It may or may not fit other models. The input voltage is 3.8 - 9 volts. Below 3.8 volts it will drop out of regulation and run direct drive. The output is 235+ lumens. The current draw is only 780ma at 6 volts. The runtime is 1 1/2+ hours on 2 CR123 primary batteries. It will easily illuminate objects at 400+ feet and will blind opponents within a 100 foot radius. The LED is a Cree XRE 7090, Q5 bin, WG tint."
