They're not particularly expensive either. What sort of current do they draw? Less than a milliamp?

They cost here in New Zealand NZ$ 0.54 cents which is about US$ 0.35.
The current is less than 1 mA. For 230 Volts operation a 220 k or 270 k resistor is used.
