You can't run it on two, but can run the KL4 head on a single rcr123.

Try a 3.7 v 17670 battery which should fit an L4. Some of the older models may require some boring out to fit the battery. Mine works well with a 17670 battery.

Someone asked the same question yesterday about the U2. Don't run a pair of R123 cells in your L4. You will fry it.
don't use 2x R123 li-ion or you will fry KL4 head...
Yeah, 2 X RCR123a is a no-no. Instant hunk of useless metal.
For your U2, don't use normal 4.2v RCR123 cells - you will overdrive the LED and controller circuit.
I'd have to put up a big red flag and say NO GO to using 2x R123s in a U2.

supposedly the KL4 works as follows
- from 4V-3V [rechargeable discharge] the driver operates as a boost circuit
- if using 2xcr123A [6V] the driver, instead of bucking, operates as direct drive, but for a very small time before going into boost, so little difference is noticed during primary discharge and rechargeable discharge in terms of relative output
