I believe the last time I picked apart the package and read the manual (gasp, I read the manual), it stated "3 watt LED running at 1 watt" along those lines. 
why don't they just use a cree or seoul?

It is a Phillips Lumileds Luxeon III driven at around 1-1.5 watt with no heatsink.
Drop in a Seoul P4-U bin and you can double the output. Too bad Maglite hasn't realized that or hasn't put it on sale.
