Surefire G2 drop-in modded with CREE Q5 and 0.8~7V, 17 modes circuit
I brought a Q5 single mode drop-in for 6P; removed the original single mode circuit (for 2 X 123a, 6V)
The new circuit is for input range from 0.8V~7V, with 3 function groups of total 17 modes; its size is 17 mm dia.
I used only the 17670 3.7V protected li-ion. So I tuned the VR for input range 3V ~ 4.2V and adopted the LED forward voltage with min. of 3.5V
Use 17670 3.7V at 4.2V,
As protected Li-ion cut off is around 2.8V, so I use a 3.0V 123a as the input to drive the LED with 3.5V = CREE lower working voltage
Clockwise is tuned down, while anti-clockwise is tuned higher.
Soldered the Q5 and got a trial.
Everything OK, then bonded the GND
The original tuned up VR position was blue dot aligned. As I wanted to get more brightness, I tuned up higher as shown position
Well, excellent brightness…………
And I started to run the stress test……….at high level……….15 mins I couldn't hold long the G2 as it was too hot.
30~ more mins later, it shutted down; however I found that the battery shrink-tube was molten
As G2 is rubber body, the heat dissipation is not good enough.
So I tuned back to my original setting, after then everything was alright and passed all the stress tests.
My CREE Q5, use 17670 3.7V Li-ion, 3 functions 17 modes regulation circuit
Beam test
Original G2 P60 at 6V (2x CR123a)
Modded with CREE Q5 and 0.8~7V regulating circuit, using protected 17670 at 4.2V
A test from a 23/F hotel room, beamed out to an in-constructing building around 2~3 hundred metres apart.
I shot a photo in the morning of the ground; as to estimate the approx. distance from the hotel to the building.
