Two days ago, Sir Edmund "Ed" Hillary passed away (1919 ~ 2008).
He, together with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay (1914 ~ 1986) were the first people to reach the top of Mount Everest (highest mountain AMSL) in 1953. This was quite an accomplishment, especially as they used relatively primitive climbing equipment compared to todays equipment.
Although better known for his 'conquest' of Mount Everest, Sir Hillary was also responsible for the creation of schools and hospitals for the mountain people of Nepal.
A very busy, down to earth, honest fellow who will be missed.
May he rest in peace.
