New lights and innovations coming out - 2008 SHOT Show

It is also possible that a new Surefire light will be shown at the 2008 SHOT show. There is a big thread on this already (CPF LED subforum) based on some webpage that appeared on the Surefire website and then was pulled out.

This is called the "backup" light, is a 1xCR123A formfactor, and has an LED that gives 5 lumens for 30+ hrs and 80 lumens for maybe 1 hr. Some have called it the E1B - as a possibly better version of the E1 outdoorsman. Others see it as an L1 competitor. It looks to have a rather smooth aluminum body (with much less knurling than the L1). It also has a clip that can fit down or up and something distinctive about the clicky (or is it a 2-stage twisty, I got confused on this one).

Awesome! I love Inova lights. Hope they put some brighter LED's in them.

I have been waiting to pick up an Inova T1 until I see what they come out with this year.

That has to be a capacitor. Those lights must have pitiful battery life.

Why not A123 Lithium technology? 10C charge rate.

Nevermind, just went to the website and saw that it fully charges in 2 min (30C) and it does say "Ultracapacitor Technology - no battery to recharge"

From the spec sheet
90min standard beam + 20 min power save mode.
25min high beam + 20 min power save mode.

Absolutely nothing new in the flashlight industry except for the emitter.

Ultracapacitors is an interesting tech. Has some serious potential. And 90 minutes isn't too shabby for a 2 minute charge!

That performance is in the territory of RCR123 lights. If they managed to make a capacitor that's really capable of such performance at the same brightness it'd be a stellar achievement, but I suspect there is something fishy going on.
What is the output, for instance? They say "high" and "standard", but is there lumen data available?

Yes, 60 lumens and 200 lumens if my memory serves me. Somewhere on the site.

Seriously, look up Ultracapacitors. It's some fascinating stuff.

Ultracaps are fascinating indeed, but they have the same problem all capacitors have - a very steep discharge curve.

Here it is in graph form:



This means that a good boost circuit is needed if the light is to maintain most of its original output. Said boost circuit would need to draw a hell of a lot of current from the cap, which wouldn't bother the cap as they are capable of very impressive discharge currents, but which would impact battery life very severely.

Add to this that the very best supercaps manage something like one tenth of the density of LiIon cells (if memory serves me right), and the only way to explain those specs is that the flashlight is very bulky and most of its volume is taken by a large supercap, with approximately 10x the volume of a RCR123 cell. More than that if the boost circuit is inefficient, even more if those lumen levels are actually real and not just the usual marketing bullshit.

If that's not the case, something is fishy.

As has been said in other threads about supercaps, they are not a good idea in flashlights. They are a good energy buffer inbetween a battery and a high discharge device (such as a camera flash), but they are a lousy energy source by themselves.

Well, their product has been shown at numerous trade shows during 2007. It got a VERY positive reception at SEMA for instance. Their numbers appear to be legit. The light isn't small. But it's not gargantuan either.

And it is 11" long (just checked the specs) so I would say that yes, that is one very large cap. Wonder what would happen if it got punctured. Have seen large electrical arcs before - don't want to again.
