I want to direct drive it. I calculated resistor value of .4 ohm to get 800 ma at 4 volts. The tailcap switch measured .4 ohms resistance so I soldered the led in without additional resistor. It works very well. I measured the current at 780ma at 4 volts. Should I be concerned about reliabiity?

As long as the LED is heatsinked well, you shouldn't have to worry.
