The place where the light don't shine
I have those 5 leds driven by 3AAA and those single luxeon driven by 1 AA battery.

In terms of flood.
I can't help thinking how 1 luxeon can ever beat a cheap 5 leds light.

But in terms of throw, can. I just think in terms of a red laser pointer beam. But in practical sense, is it really useful, cause the spot at far is so small, that have to shift the light to see an small area.

But since there is CPF, maybe there are some led using single AA battery lights that can offer comparative good flood to multiple leds and also offer good throw.

Any recommendations, guys?

when You remove the focusing device on the Luxeon, it easily beats the (also unfocused) 5mm leds in flood.

when using a focusing device for the 5 mm leds, they give quite a beam
(that was important be4 Luxeon single Led were available)
looks like this here:

and is, imho, a small aspheric for a 5 mm led

but no chance 5mm can beat high power leds anywehre. Would be a real surprise if, because the single dies run on way higher current.

PS: one can doo flood things with a focused light, but not vice-versa. Thats why all the good lights offer some kind of medium spot-to-flood beam

Either the bare LED(a current gen one would be better, more output) or a smaller reflector should give you a floodier beam.
