Fenix L2D-CE Q5 is the brightest stock one that I can remember.

There is definitely something brighter, but it might have to be modded/made to be that bright.

So who makes a custom 2AA that's over 200 Lumens?

Actually, I find Fenix 2LD Q4 bright enough. But it would be interesting to own the next generation beyond Q5 or something custom.

Would heat be an issue? The L2D can get hot if run on Turbo extensively. Probably not to the point of failure, but they do warn not to use it on Turbo for a long time given high ambient temperature.

There are a few people would will do it and you could probably also make something yourself. There are some 1 amp drivers for 2 AAs(hard to find though) so that would give around 230 lumen at the LED. Could be around 200 lumen out the front if you use a decent optic.

Heat shouldn't be too much of an issue if you hold the light while you use it.

I like Fenix 2LD (Q4) but is there something brighter that runs on 2AA?

The Fenix L2D-Q5 - manages Turbo Mode: 180 lumens (2.4hrs)

Not quite 2x regular AA - however I just tried this - a P3D-Q5 or RB100 head will run on a L2D body using 2x 3.7V rechargeable Li-Ion 14500 - which gives an output that is brighter than on the 2x primary CR123A - which are spec'd to be -
P3D-Q5: Turbo Mode: 215 lumens
P3D- RB100: Turbo Mode: 200 lumens

Please see my trials with 3.7V rechargeable Li-Ion with the P3D-RB100 in
