help with palmblaze mod...

My K2 in my palmblaze burned out so I am replacing it with a Q5 and 8 mode board.

I managed to remove the K2 from the head of the palmblaze.

I am wondering if I will need a heatsink...if so, what do I attach it to? I am familiar with heatsinks, thermal compound, etc...as I do build my own custom PC's.

The starboard will obviously be at the top of the head, against the lense, and the circuit board will be at the bottom of the head/top of the battery body....leaving a small gap between the led star board and the circuit board. Does this setup need a heatsink? If so...what would you suggest?

The LED should already be on a heatsink, so try to mount the Cree there.

As for the board, as long as it is touching some hind of metal it should be fine.

Remember the lens might not work well with the Cree (maybe you have already verified that it works), you might want a different optic or a reflector.

I had to destroy the metal base the k2 was mounted to, in order to remove the k2. What should I use as a heatsink then?

Maybe the correctly sized piece of copper tubing?(don't know what it's called but the kind that has a flat end to cap off a tube)

OK. Is there much difference between the K2 led size and the Q5? I am hoping it works with the palmblaze lense..

You mean a square vs. a circle? Or....?

I thought that the square beam pattern from the k2 was caused by the reflector, not the emitter itself.

The pattern is due to both the lens and LED(square die).

The emitting pattern is narrower on the Cree. I'm not sure how it would affect the beam pattern though.

It might work, but with a different beam pattern.
