So. Cal Edison decided to replace some old transformers up our street Friday night so the power was shut off for two and a half hours while they did their work. It gave me some time to play with my 2D MagLed and compare it with my neighbor's 3D incandescent MagLight. I later ended up chatting with three of my neighbors four houses up from me. Except for our flashlights, some solar powered garden lights, two candles visible through a window in a house across the street, and a Honda EU2000i portable generator powering work lights and tools being used by the Edison crew about 60 feet from where we were, there was no light on our block.

Earlier that week, I remembered seeing a billboard by where I work which said "Moonvertising is comming, watch the next full moon" with a picture of the Rolling Rock beer logo projected on the moon and the web address http://www.moonvertising.com underneath.

There was a full moon last night which my neighbors and I also watched while the power was shut off but we didn't see anything projected onto its surface.

Today, I saw a news report about the supposed "Moonvertising" campaign by Rolling Rock beer. The person interviewed said the light from the lasers would spread out long before hitting the moon. Even if the beam did make it to the moon, it would likely not be visible to the naked eye. Not to mention about the possibility of blinding pilots. They all concluded that the "Moonvertising" campaign was really just a publicity stunt by the beer company. http://cbs2.com/dave/?nbid=681062#681062

On a similar note, I remember an old 7 up commercial where one guy attempted to project the 7 up logo on the moon with a giant laser but ended up "vaporizing" the moon itself instead. "OK, WHO HAS BEEN MESSING WITH MY LASER !?"
