Re: What are CPFer\'s Computer Specs?????

Iddibhai,

To tell you the truth, I'm not sure why I got it either. I RAIDed 8 of them, and I've done some video editing and backup, so I guess the hard drive space and speed is there if I don't want to delete something and need quick access to my program projects or video projects.

I went ahead and MPEGed/DIVXed all my tapes (movies, tv shows, anime, sports games, ect) as well as all my music CDs and stuck them onto my computer, so two of my raid arrays are full of just DivX/MPEG files... Virtual CloneCD is also a big space grabber, so I guess I can say I'm a total failure when it comes to optimizing disk space...

I'm even afraid to do a defrag/full-scandisk on all these disks...

BTW, I'd rather upgrade to a 3.0G P-4 and grab myself a HyperThread capable MB, slap on a couple Gigs of RAM and let'er rip...

Re: What are CPFer\'s Computer Specs?????

Pentium 4 2.4 GHz because it won't overheat and throws off less heat than brand A.

Zalman heat sink because it's quiet.

Matrox G550 dual-head video because it works and it's quiet.

Samsung 172t flat panel monitor because they said it was the best, and I love it.

Seagate Barracuda V disk because it's quiet.

Q-technology 300 W. power supply because it's quiet.

AMS electronics cf-1006 case with 120 mm fan, because it's quiet.

My second PC started life as a HP Pavilion. It's a good machine but it sounded like a vacuum cleaner. After putting up with the noise for a year I vowed to fix it, and I did. Now my obsession for quiet computers greatly exceeds my obsession for flashlights.

eluminator,
I too crave quiet. is there a way to make my eMac fan quieter ? or should I have just gotten an iMac (quiet fan!) in the first place?

Re: What are CPFer\'s Computer Specs?????

Ted, there are almost certainly things you ca do to quiet it. But you'll have to take it apart. Find the size of the fans in there and get some extra quiet ones to replace them. There are a lot of articles on the internet about people doing this with other models.

Since yours has the monitor in the same box you have to be very careful when you crack the case not to contact the screen power supplies!

The other thing you can do is a little more potentially dangerous, just put some resistance in series with the main fan to reduce the speed of it. The chips in there run very cool compared to "ahem" some other processors that are more commonly used. But make sure that you are still moving air and run one of the utilities that measure the temp for you to be sure you're not running too hot.

With the monitor in there as well you can't really shut the fans down as that stuff generates much more heat.

As far as my machine, didn't someone post this same question a few months ago?

I've got no fewer than 4 different Macs in the house actually in use. An Alpha linux box and a couple of qnix machines left over from other projects. There is a PC around here somewhere, an old 386 that I used to experiment with Linux about 6 or 7 years ago... really should get rid of that. I program computers, both Mac's and Windows machines for a living, so my decision not to own one at home was a very educated one.

Re: What are CPFer\'s Computer Specs?????

Alright, No one laugh. You know what they say about the cobblers kids... Well, I work on computers all day long and this is what I have.

AMD Athlon 800Mhz
256Mb RAM
40+13Gb HDs both 5400 rpm :p
Radeon 7500
cheapest crap 17" monitor I could find
24x10x40 CD-RW that I JUST got a couple months ago
5X Creative PC-DVD Dxr2 with the decoder board (heh who wastes slots with a decoder board anymore?)
Hauppauge Win-TV
SB-Live
Klipsch 5.1 ( I know it hooked to a Live and not an Audigy but /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif )
modem, nic, floppy all the rest of the insignificant stuff.

I am very excited that I will be able to buy a new computer in about three months.

On a more high tech note. At work we are building the new P4 3.06 HT(Hyper Threading) PCs with serial ATA HDs. I haven't been impressed by a PC in a long while now but these machine are pretty incredible.

Best regards,
Randy

Re: What are CPFer\'s Computer Specs?????

I don't know. The simple way to get quieter air movement is to use a larger fan and have it turn slower. The problem is with most computer cases it's difficult or impossible to fit a larger fan.

I think some fans are inherently quieter than others of the same size when moving the same amount of air.

Unfortunately I have never had a Mac and know nothing about their construction. I noisy power supply is easy. Just replace with a quiet one. Unfortunately that's not usually the problem. The fan that cools the CPU is usually the largest noise generator. If the CPU heatsink has a built-in fan, replace it with a Zalman. But I don't know if they are available for a Mac. If the case fan is noisy you may be able to shoehorn in a larger one. If it is ducted to the CPU, you'll probably have to replace the duct with something larger or install a second large (at least 92 mm) fan inside to blow air on the CPU. If you can remove the computer from the original case and install it in a larger case, that makes larger fans easy. It's easy to do with PCs but I don't know about Macs.

I didn't pay much attention to the specs of the larger (120mm or 92mm) fans I now use. I knew they had a good reputation, and I slow them down using one of the several fan speed controllers available on the internet. Or run them on 7 volts (that's 12 volts minus 5 volts).

There are several internet sites dedicated to quiet PCs. quietpc.com endpcnoise.com etc. Just search for "quiet pc". I don't know if there are any for Macs though.

If you have a high-powered video card with built-in fan, you have another source of noise. Then there are the over-clockers. They aren't happy unless they can hear their fans screaming from across the street.

Be careful though. You might find yourself buying an IR thermometer to check for hot spots, putting heatsinks on mobo chips that didn't have any, and otherwise spending more time messing with your computer than you do buying flashlights. You will be using your Arc AAA a lot though.

One of the nice things about the Pentium 4 and my new Asus mobo is I can read their temperatures just by running a small program that came with the mobo.
