Hey all,

I don't have any experience with Red lights. I am looking for a light with a red led. Ideally, it would have a red and a white mode. Should run on CR123s if possible. It is for my wife's nightstand. She is currently using my L4 with a red filter. She often leaves the light on, on its side. it gets quite hot, and the battery life isn't great. Most of all, I want my L4 back.

Can be cheap or pricey, but a good fit with the above features would be great.

Thanks.

I modded an old QIII I had lying around with a Red Cree fro DX. It really turned out nice with minimal work. Take out old Star, put in new star and ream out base of reflector just a tad. Nice Red flooder.

On a nightstand, I assume you are wanting the red to be as low as possible, less than 2ish lumens. My setup is a 2xAAA MiniMag with a single red 5mm plugged in, and clipped onto the back there is a black fauxton with a CR2032 installed for a relatively dim but white light for better color rendition when needed and lots of runtime, and tritium vial as a locater in the dark.

I also now have a 1xAA red Gerber Infinity with the same fauxton and tritium clipped on the back.

The ultra dim red don't hurt your eyes when you get up in the middle of the night.

This is not a complete list by any means, but here are some more red lights for you to consider:

Low-end options:

Rigel Systems LED Flashlights
http://members.cox.net/rigelsys/flashlight.html
(9 volts battery, last forever; adjustable; dual mode is available)

Peak LED Solutions' Matterhorn 1-LED
http://www.peakledsolutions.net/Products/Matterhorn_HA_1LED.html
(One AAA; very small and useful but no dual mode)

High-end options:

Ra Lights Twisty (TR-70 model)
http://www.ralights.com/Twisty.html
(this is my favorite one; dual mode; one CR123A; problem-- very new on market; hard to get at the moment)

Surefire A2 Aviator
http://www.surefire.com/maxexp/main/co_disp/displ/prrfnbr/900/sesent/00
(dual-mode; two CR123As)

Hope this helps!

That Rigel looks great for our purposes. Does it click on, or does the button need to be held down?

I can't buy the Ra or SF, as I would inevitably steal them.

Lol

Well, I have the Starlite Mini with red LEDs and the switch is actually a dial. So to turn it on, you would roll it on with your thumb. So it goes like this as you push the dial; off, click, very dim to max. No need to hold down any buttons.

Also something else to know (this is so you know what you're getting) is that the window output is square (!). Personally, this is actually a nice feature for me; I use this flashlight on my star charts in astronomy and it give a nice even area of light.

Good luck!
