All good things must come to an end.....

As some of you have noticed, over the past year or so, FLDB and the main LightRefineries review site have been sorely neglected. To the point where even the scammers and crackers noticed. I am very disappointed in the quality of some of the software we used to use as vulnerabilities in the software enabled a compromise, through the web, down to the filesystem level of the server. The vulnerabilities have since been addressed. By nuking the aforementioned software off my server. I have run servers for almost a decade and never been compromised.. till now. The sole reason of hijacking my box was to serve spam ads.

I would like to say a couple of things....

- To the spammers and scammers - thanks for making everybody's life a living hell. We hope you receive yours in the afterlife. Like terrorists there is a special place reserved for you.

- To those who actually buy the 'enlargement' 'herbal' 'products' that the spammers are selling, you are just as lame. Literally. In the very *ahem* you are so trying to enlarge. And for that fact, if you actually believe that what they are selling works, you must be just as stupid as you are lame.

That having been said..

Thank you to all of you who have supported FLDB and the site through the years. Unfortunately I no longer have time to continually defend my systems against a rising tide of lameness on the Net and as such I have decided to turn in my root admin password (ie. turn in my keys). This means FLDB has to go. My apologies. Please direct all hate mail to the spammers, for they are the ones that caused this.

No, despite the fact that we ran Adsense ads, all the ads did was defray the cost of the VPS, which turned out to be a Very [e]xpensive Private Server in addition to a Virtual Private Server. So I did not get rich out of this. FLDB was truly a community resource for the community and would have run for a long time if not for this.

Additionally, a very special thanks to all of those of you who took the time to write reviews. These reviews were read over 151 THOUSAND times by the lighting community. Your time helped them and you have our gratitude.

The site is closed, FLDB will be closing shortly. Thanks again for all your support.

PS: As for myself on the other hand I will continue to stick around on the forums. Site's gone... but I am certainly not! :D

Re: End of the Road

!!!
:awman:, That's terrible! I really liked the quality of your reviews, your style of writing, and great pictures! Just last week, I directed a member to the ROP recipe on your site, only to find it was down. I'll really miss your site. It was the first flashlight-related site I came across in December of 2006 (can't remember how I stumbled across it, though) and what led me to Doug's site and to these forums. Any chance you'll use CPF as a medium for continuing your writing?

Whew! I was worried when I saw the title of this thread. I'm sorry for your troubles, but I'm sure glad you will still be around CPF.

Kevin, thanks for all you did. I don't blame you for reaching a point of frustration. If this stops being a fun hobby, why bother?

Re: End of the Road

You'd think people would have better things to do than ruin what somebody else is trying to accomplish, especially something as innocent as a flashlight review site. Morons!

Re: End of the Road

I'm sorry to see the site go and the information contained therein. Your Mag Mod instructions are how I learned to do my first mod and I still keep a copy of the PDF to give to people so they can learn to do their own. It would be nice if the data contained there could be hosted elsewhere so as to not lose it entirely.

Thanks for all the work you did.

Re: End of the Road

kavvika, js: Don't worry :D I am a little bit tougher than some site hijacking spammer wants to believe. I will still be around. Sometimes we need to change position slightly to take shelter from the incoming rain but we will always be around.. and cheers to that! :buddies:

Thank you for reminding me that there is still a place to write and post. Also I should take this opportunity to thank our forum admins, mods and Sasha again, because having just had a site damaged, I know how much work it takes to stay on top of these things.

LuxLuthor: I agree.. the site has become a pain, but however the hobby has not. I still use my lights every day (in particular at day job), and CPF is still a great community. So I'm quite glad to lose the site but will still continue to be here amongst friends. Perhaps I should have been more specific in the title - End of the Road for FLDB. I certainly did not intend to cause alarm especially amongst a community I value.

NA8: In due time :)

MARNAV1: fully agreed! The problem is that these malware purveyors will hijack any site for their ends. They were trying to hawk both porn and prescription drugs, no doubt being used for 'off label' uses. The oddest part, though, is that the damage was NOT immediately visible from the site. It was embedded in the HTML via PHP. You can't actually tell from my page. Google tipped me off (in part due to the Adsense ads). Unless the spammers were trying to hijack my page, alter the content, and thus trick Google Adsense into displaying ads for the above.. but as far as I know Google does not condone such things and carry such ads anyway!

So it was an exercise in futility for them. Thanks again to Google for helping me out with this.

Lunal_Tic: Thanks, the one thing I was concerned about were the ROP instructions. In the meantime, feel free to redistribute the PDF. I will try and see if I can write a better version. Now if I could find somewhere to host photos.... :)

PS: I am still holding out for the Surefire UA2 and UB2. Keep me posted!! This flashaholic is not exactly 'gone'! :welcome:

I am new to CPF, but in my short experance I can say there are a lot of good people out there who are kind and will go out of their way to help you. I wish I could have read some of your writting, before the scammers caused you to quit, but keep writing on the forum,I am sure many people would like to continue to read your writting as would I. I have learned a lot, from good kind people who are Forum members.I made a commet about a footnote a member had written under his thread, explaining what it was about and the real truth of why it happened,I thought I would loose my membership over it,but as I said the truth will not stay silent, and should not be silent in a free country.those who seek the truth will find it. most of all , do not let a bunch of meat heads stop you ,from what I have read many of us out here want to read what you have to say,so please keep on with you writting P.S trying to post this I am responsable for accidently puting the icon above your thread,I do not know how or why ,I could not even delete it but quit before I messed something else up I am sorry for the screw up ,before ever posting again ,I will only use 1 letter just to be sure it goe's where it is suppose to before moving on.
