I visited Brightguy today, and he showed me some reasonably priced continuously variable output lights from Energizer:

I looked at them and they looked very interesting for the price, all in the $40 to 45 range. The 2-AA version has a continuously variable output of 110 lumens down to what looks like 20 lumens, although there is no specs listed for the low end. The 1-AA version goes from 60 lumens down to what I would guess is about 10 lumens. There is also a rather bulky looking 4-AAA version which boasts a high end of 90 lumens. Along with that is a variable output somwhat focusable headlamp that lets you choose power supplies of either AA or AAA batteries. The clips on the light look very good, although the lights I tried were rather inconsistent in the centering of the LED and the tint was on the blue/purple side. Still, they come with lithium cells and the lights have a lifetime warranty.
