I thought folks might enjoy seeing these, up to 1 meter resolution images released by the european space agency. There are several really good ones linked from:

http://www.instapundit.com/archives/008654.php#008654

They show quite clearly that even the regular looking houses that are across the street from the targets are still standing and that for all the bombing there are very few holes in Bagdad. I don't know where the news reports of indiscrimanent bombing are coming from, but it's certainly not anyone who's seen it and is telling the truth.

In the first image you'll see large black smoke trails over much of the city, but in the smaller more detailed images you can clearly see that these are trenches of burning oil and are not burning buildings or anything like that. Saddam is putting a smoke screen over the city. But it's not a "burning hell" as I thought by reading the NYT earler...

That'll teach you to read the NYT!

Thanks for the link. Good stuff, I especially liked the commentary [ QUOTE ]
YET ANOTHER UPDATE: Jon Lee Anderson of The New Yorker as calling Baghdad

"a landscape of death and wanton devastation, all stamped "Made in America.""

Give it up, dude. This is the Internet -- and now we can fact-check your *** from orbit.

Holey moley those are some fantastic pic's.

I'm trying hard to refrain from passing my opinion on the bombing results so I'll be generic as possible... Seems to me the damage is minimal, even on the intended targets. Heck, if I were a person being targetted I'd sleep pretty cozy if I were at a friend's house across the street from my usual abode (well, for the time being anyway).

Thanks again for the link!

One of the things that amazes me is the progress in overhead imaging - these generally available civilian images are much better than most of what I had available to me in the military when doing BSDA (Bomb Strike Damage Assessment) analyis in Viet Nam.

Thanks for the links, for an out-of-date imaging specialist they say a whole lot.

When you see a "little blackened/burned hole" in the roof...that building's gutted inside, anything inside is likely gone/vaporized! As far as the buildings around...probably some exterior/structural damage from the percussion...I wouldn't want to be across the street!!

If you think about it, since when have we had the opportunity to point the finger at a hole in the wall or a crack in a window and say: "you da' bomb, go here!"...

We've come a long ways since carpet-bombing entire cities and dropping nukes to crater them into the ocean. And although the technology is never 100% effective (things will always go wrong), it's as accurate and as humane as can be in an inhumane event.

From the satelitte images, there's minimal outside damage to any other structures besides it. And although I'm sure civilians have been hit unintentionally, the dreamed up collateral damage numbers that that dead regime has put up are beyond laughable.

Okay okay, I accept being corrected. (slap slap) Thanks for doing it so politely, by the way. It just seemed like those shots, combined with some TV pics of other similar buildings from street-level... well, okay I presumed too much, especially if Thomas has pro experience. That's cool.

Was anyone able to get links to more recent pics? I wasn't able to get any from that spaceimaging.com site.

PLUSSSS, don't forget the bunker buster bombs that penetrate the ground to "some classified depth" and go "pop"....there's been photo examples of those on some of the briefings on the telly.
