I was able to get some red Nichia CS LED's so I put them in a minimag and a mag solitaire that I had laying around.

I am surprised red lights are not more popular, they are great for late nights without killing your eyes or waking anybody up. I also like them for outdoor games at night with my kids when I need to hide from them. They are great for hunting to preserve night vision without spooking any animals as well.

Re: Minimag and solitaire with Red Nichia CS LED

Are they both running direct drive just plugged right into the bulb socket? Is the Solitaire still running off 1xAAA?

They are both direct drive, The minimag are running on dead AA alkaline batteries and the solitaire is running 3 cheap LR44 button cells with a wad of aluminum foil behind it to fill the empty space of the battery tube .

Does it require the LR44 button cells or would 1xAAA work?

And where did you get the LEDs?

You can use any button cell you want that fits the diameter of the battery tube, it does not have to be LR44. An AAA does not work so well, the LED is very dim.

I got the LED's from Nichia

I tried it once with a Minimag, but could never get it to work right, either the led wouldn't stay in place or it was too big for the socket, I forget which.

LR44+wad vs. 10440... mmm
while at the same voltage...I think the 10440 would last practically forever:thumbsup:

I used button cells because that is what I had laying around the house along with the solitaire. I did not want to put any money into this light except for the LED.

Total cost of project was .89 cents

did you have to make any mod to the battery tube? I have a bunch of LR44 (AG13) batteries lying around, but they can't seem to fit into the solitaire's tube.

thank.s
