I don't get it. It's more than a battery code, it's dimmensions. Say you had a room that measured 12ft by 17 feet. If someone asked you to describe the size of the room, would you say " one, twenty one, seven"?

Everyone knows it's dimensions, but the way they're written, it's like one long name. That's all.
This is how I say the li-ion names:
18650 = 18 - 6 - 50
17670 = 17 - 6 - 70
18500 = 18 - 500
17500 = 17 - 500
It's just easier to say than 18 thousand, 6 hundred 50.

But if you had a room measuring "at-first-glance-arbitrary-seeming five-digit number" in size...
Also, 18-6-50 is fewer syllables than 18-65-0, and lowering the number of syllables governs a huge amount of speech.
