I found a couple of butane lighters at the store my Sister works at that won't easily let the gas out like a bic. They have a more substantial flame then the little mini zippo too!

I EDC a Sarome PSD901. No fuel window, but it's otherwise a nice enough, solid butane lighter.

When I don't have room for that, I carry a cheap thin lighter from Deal Extreme.

I have lots of other lighters, including a Colibri which isn't reliable, a small Zippo which loses it fuel after less than a week, and DX peanut which is an awkward size for pockets and fiddly to use (and I had to replace the o-ring).

    Very nice pic!

Yes, when a full size Zippo has a load of fuel it can be a wonderful thing.

But at my usage frequency I often found it dry.

Thankfully I have found a couple butane lighters cheap that do what I need WHEN I need!

    Thanks!

Yeah, the fuel does evaporate over time. I have found that a full Zippo will last me about 3 weeks to a month.

But since I don't smoke, it's very rarely used (mostly to light campfires or someone else's cigarette ). I'm sure I would have to refuel at least every other week if I was a smoker.

I always carry a small fuel canister in my jacket though, just in case.

I LOVE this one from DealExtreme:

    http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.3425

Forget 'iron-melting' but this thing is a BEAST when you tweak it for high pressure. It'll flick from jet to flamethrower, back and forth, and it's awesome. Then you can turn it down for normal use, even down to a flame you would see from a Bic lighter. I love it I love it I love it.

Interesting VI but not nearly EDC size!!!

Some disposable butane lighters are less likely to let butane out in my pocket. So I carry one like that.

I really only carry a lighter to start fire in the burn barrel, but it's important to have a reliable lighter that will start heavy paper.

That DX lighter surely would but it would look like a gun in my pocket!

That's very nice tx101 but again if you don't use it regularly IE: smoking, it will be dry when you need it most.

Butane is better for a non smoker.

    Unfortunately .... I am a smoker
At any one time I have three or four lighters in my pockets
.... these pesky Zippos do run out of fuel all of a sudden

You should try a Scripto VU lighter, it uses a double tank system to avoid needless evaporation.

The disadvantage of butane is that it does not produce any useful light. Of course, this is a flashlight forum, so that is not a problem for most of us.

My use for fire is to start something burning.

For light I'll use a LED!

Here's some of my old and one new favorite from my semi-collection.

    From L to R

    1. This big boy belonged to my father and is at least 50 yrs. old. It's aluminum with the bottom half being a reservoir for fuel that's separate from the wadding and flint tube in the top part. It's marked: Trailyter Commodities Corp. Cleveland, O.

    2. This little guy was my mother's and is also at least 50 yrs. old. It has the Zenith name on the side. On the bottom it says: Type-D Made by K.K.S. Made in Occupied Japan

    3. Scripto Vu-Lighter purchased by me in 1969.

    4. Peanut lighter that's a couple weeks old from County Comm.

I EDCed a peanut before going butane.

It retains fluid smashingly well but just doesn't burn hot enough for my use.

I cherry picked a butane that will flame a good 2" and I can start cardboard or heavy chemical bags with it NO PROBLEM!

We frequently light candles so a little pressure from a butane lighter allows the lighter to be tipped downwards to light a wick. Zippos are zip for me because they dry out too fast and the flame cannot be pointed down.

The cheap ~$1.40 electric Bic works well for my purposes. Remove the metal shroud, lift the plastic thumb plunger out and use needle nose pliers to pull up on the small, metal, "safety" on the upper rear of the lighter. Replace the plunger and snap the metal guard back into place and the lighter works more easily, with only a push and no resetting of the safety each time.
I'm absolutely certain that I need another flashlight.

Didn't see if it has been mentioned or not yet, but to prolong the fluid retention on a Zippo, all you have to do is wrap a section of bicycle inner tube around the two halves of the lighter to seal up the only seam on the lighter. I usually get 2-3 weeks before the fluid evaporates without the rubber on the lighter, but 8-10 weeks or more with the big rubber band around the Zippo. Only takes an extra second or two to use.
Ha ha, you fool!! You fell victim to one of the classic blunders. The most famous is never get involved in a land war in Asia; and only slightly less well known is this: Never go against a Sicilian, when death is on the line!

Sorry, no link, but they look just like the regular disposable Bics with the "spark wheel." With the easy modification, pressing on the thumb "button or actuator" is all it takes; no sore thumbs for frequent users and no additional pressing of a safety device. It's no longer child proof if you remove the parts mentioned, so I probably shouldn't use it.

I thought these piezoelectric versions of the standard Bic were common. The local "Kwik Trip" convenience gas stations have them in my small town. Sometimes they're on sale for $1!

Me smokum cigars, so I always have some lighter or another on me.
Usually I just pick something up from the local corner Stop-and Rob.
I have gone through 4 Colibris, and even though I only used there fuel, all of them got to where the flame was useless. I give up on the expensive, over-rated lighters. I do not like zippos because everytime I need it, it seems like it is dry, or the flint is worn out. PHOOOEEEYYY!
Cheap corner store junk works everytime, and when empty toss it.
I have been thinking about the Helios, but somehow think it is just a bigger, over-rated Colibri. Someone prove me wrong and I may spring for one.
Ahhh, the smell of a good cigar in the morning.
