Lights with candle mode?

Ever since mag-lites I've always been kinda fond of flashlights with candle mode, can anyone recommend some good lights that have this feature? Thanks

Fenix lights like the LOD, P2D, L2D, etc, have a candle mode so to speak in that they can tail stand. Meaning you can turn them on and set them on a flat surface and the light will bounce off of the ceiling and light the room. This is a feature I really like in lights.

Oh, also, Surefire sells tail caps for their P60 series lights that allow them to do the same.

ETA: The E2D series do this as well.

Well, there's candle mode and there's tailstanding.

For candle mode, you remove the light's head and let the lightsource shine in all directions.

To tailstand, simply set the light on its tail and point it at the ceiling. Tailstanding is easier and results in softer shadows, which I like.

Good point on the differences and thanks for clarifying.

To me they produce similar results in that they light a room and not just a spot.

They do produce pretty much the same results. I just didn't want the OP to think that Mags are the only lights capable of area-lighting a room.

That only works if you have a ceiling. Using a tailstander on a picnic table outside won't help much.

Fenix L0D-CE, E1, or E01 --


Simply press a Chap-Stick cap onto the bezel end.

Works great !

Although the BEST cap is from a Chap-Stick "Natural" flavor,
which can sometimes be difficult to find.
(its cap is somewhat "frosted clear", rather than a solid white)


For the Fenix L1D / L2D versions,
a clear (frosted) plastic canister from 35mm film
can be adapted quite nicely.

Cut or drill a hole, somewhat smaller than the bezel.

If you really wanna' get fancy, you can stuff clear plastic "bubble wrap" inside.


For Mini-Maglites, i never remove the head ! :shakehead

I pop a Bayer aspirin bottle (50 or 100 size, plain ol' regular aspirin),
white plastic bottle over the bezel.

This works just like it was MADE for the job !

The only difficult part is removing the paper label,
which is glued onto the bottle VERY securely !

Hint: i've found that WD-40, applied heavily,
will slowly and gradually loosen the adhesive.

Be Patient ! Let it soak in very well !


Hey, it's not really necessary to remove
each and every last bit of paper label,
but i happen to be quite a perfectionist. :devil:

I don't think any P60 host or drop in can be used without the reflector, bezel or lens.

you cant use a bare emittor for candle mode, bare emitter is a directional flood, because LEDs only produce light in (iirc) 120 degree angle, while bulbs produce light all around.

What i have been doing is using my LF2X, because its head is removable, the reflector part that is, you have a directional flood light, and with the diffsuer, you have a candle mode light as well.

thanks for the tips on how to make makeshift diffusers, I just got a romisen rc-n3 and a fenix 01 and I'm sure one of these tricks will work perfectly. Of course they also sell diffusers for the other fenix models, but I havent saved up for one of those yet. Thanks for all the comments!
