Seeing as it's pretty new, I'm guessing that no one has it yet.

The Solarforce lights should be easier to upgrade, but I'm not sure how they (the Spiderfire and the Solarforce) compare in output and quality.

What are you looking for in your next light?

Main things would be something thats durable with a good throw, i use my lights alot or exploration so good runtimes would also be a bonus but as it may get dropped the strengh has to be high.

Batteries it runs on are not too important as long as its the main ones aa,aaa,cr123a.

Easy upgrading would be a bonus too really :)

I have been told by a major eBay Solarforce dealer that Spiderfire is made by Solarforce. So the quality should be similar. Personally, I would recommend the Solarforce L2 because of the upgrade options. The Spiderfire C R8 looks like it will be a great thrower if that's what you need. Although the L2 throws very well also.:candle:

How much throw are you looking at, around 50 meter or more like 200? 200 is more of a strech for the lower priced lights but there are some narrow beam angled ones that will hit that far if your eyes are night adapted.

What price?

The Solarforce should be good for most uses, it's also pretty easy to upgrade.

Anything over 100meters would be good, not too narrow a beam if it can be helped :)
Price wise $40 is near the top of my price range, would you recommend the r2 or q5 version of the L2 ?? :)

Thanks for all the replys

The DX version is probably Type II finish, but it's almost $25 less. Is it a better value?

I would think so the Type II Anodize is a better value.

The Type III Hard Anodize has many flaws on my light.

I also had a twisted o-ring which broke off.

The head is glued.

The only thing that would have justified the +$25.00 would be if my light had better Type III Hard Anodize finish.

The only other difference I can see is my light comes with a holster but the holster is not that durable.

I got the Spider-Fire R8 Cree XRE-R2 from DX a few days ago.

I could screw off the bezel:

p1050040lm7.jpg

pill: outer diameter 23.8mm, length without emitter and spring 15.4mm,
driver board diameter 16mm
reflector: aluminium OP, outer diameter 30mm, length 25mm

p1050041xb2.jpg

reverse clicky, off - high - low - off, resistor for low 6.8Ohm,

input current with 2*RCR123: high 740mA, low 520mA
input current with 1*18650: high 510mA, low 140mA

I measured the input current with my bench power supply (high mode only) and calculated the input power.
stromuc0.gif
leistungqo3.gif

From 2.5V to 5V input current and power grow with increasing voltage.
Above 5V the input curent decreases, input power stays nearly constant.

With an USB-oscilloscope I could see that the buck regulator only works with 2*RCR123 on high setting.
With 2*RCR123 on low setting and 1*18650 at both settings there is no regulation.

My review in the german Messerforum.net.
