BMW have introduced a new concept car: its body is made of fabric. :eek:oo:

The fabric is stretched over a mesh of metallic wires that can change their shape.

For more details and pics: GINA

And there's even a video

If the body is stiff enough to keep its shape at speed, then how do those highly tensioned rods that keep the car's shape fare in an accident? How far do they fly?

GINA is a hilarious name for a car

"How do I look in my new Gina?"

"Would you take a picture of me in this Gina?"

Does it shrink if you wash it with warm water?

Can I blow my nose on it?

Must be great to have stains actually embed themselves into the fabric.

Hopefully just a publicity gimmick.

There has to be at least one BMW Designer who stood up and said, "Won't our customers die a horrible death if they get into an accident with another vehicle?"

Saturns have (had) plastic bodies. Corvettes are fiberglass. The bodies of those cars probably don't do much to help protect the occupants in a crash yet people still drive them.

It all boils down to the unibody frame components and the crush zones.

Gina is the new Bounty - "The quicker picker upper" :p

(bounty paper towel commercial)

That might help in soaking up the blood of the dead passengers.

For God sakes, it's a car. Not a couch. Who's the retard who came up with fabric as a good material to use on the outside??

And who are the idiots who actually agreed with him??
These are the type of people designing BMWs?

Remember it's not a production car. BMW have no plans for making cars made of fabric. It's just a development of ideas.

And it's like you guys think that the external bodywork is what protects you in a collision. And obviously, a car like this would have extra protection inside.

Not here, I'm just thinking it won't hold up to weather, bugs, washing, some jealous kid with a pocket knife. . . . .

It'll look like my kitchen towels after a night of Chinese food when driven during a hot, humid day in the midwest when all the bugs are out.
