I have a second or third generation 9v light, the Sea Pal:

I installed a fresh 9v and stuck a piece or paper around the battery, dated 10/3/05. At the end of 5/08 this year, it finally wasn't bright enough to either be useful as a nightlight, and it wouldn't cycle through modes. So the little guy kept a standby mode for over 2.5 years, passing it's spec rating.
I also managed to get some of these before James (I can't remember his last name) changed them to the now Safelight that Wits End sells.
The SP3:

The only orange light I own.

That's impressive. My PAL lite or whatever it's called didn't even make it 6 months on 1 battery, and that's without any use.

Ow, maybe you got a bad battery? Was it a brand name?
And don't some PAL lites have a night light (locator) mode? Maybe it slowly sipped it to death.

Or problem with the light itself, but likely just the battery.

There were few intermittent uses of it during that time, but nothing over 30 seconds at a time, mostly just playing with it or cycling through modes in the dark for fun.
