This post asks what lights you would pack for a trip into the unknown. It is a slightly different scenario than JimH's interesting "Lights you'd go to war with – a Game" posting.
You are outfitting your backpack to prepare for an extended "adventure vacation" to an unknown destination. The question is what flashlight(s) will you choose to be best prepared without knowing ahead of time exactly what your destination is. Your flashlight(s) should be choosen in the context of your entire package of equipment; i.e. the light will not be the only thing you have competing for space and weight.
So...
What light(s) would you bring?
What factors lead to your decision?
- The minimum duration of your trip will be 3 months. The maximum duration will be 1 year.
- Destination is completely unknown. Could be Western Europe, could be rural Mongolia, could be North America, could be the Sahara Desert, could be anywhere on earth.
- Significant portions of your travel will be done on foot, you will have to carry everything you bring.
- Food and water will be provided, but you will need to carry 2-3 days worth at a time.
- Clothing, footgear, and sleeping bag will be provided at the destination and will be suitable to the climate. If you want further shelter you have to bring it.
- You are required to bring the following electrical devices: GPS receiver of your choosing, shortwave receiver of your choosing, flashlight(s) of your choosing, two-way radio (FRS, GMRS, PMR446, etc. (*) ) of your choosing. You may bring any additional electronics if you can justify the space and weight to yourself.
- (*) Assume that anybody you need to communicate with will have a radio compatible with your choice. Further assume that your radio may be operated anywhere in the world without concern for local laws.
- Once your backpack is packed it will sit in storage until your adventure begins. It could be days or it could be years. You will have to grab your pack and begin on a moment's notice.
