I just bought a R2 drop-in from DX and the emitter seems to be glued in with silicone.Doesn't silicone transfer heat poorly?It looked,smelled and felt like silicone but I could be mistaken.

It's probably the white "glue" that DX and others sell. It is silicone- I have some myself. It usually works just fine. It's not as good as some of the 2 part epoxy products...but actually does a fine job for most applications.
