Take any quality flashlight, say the Fenix L2D. It would be just like it is, but on the side of the head would be a window with a side emitting LED. It would not have a reflector, just the LED behind the window for area lighting. It's operation could be selected on part of the UI.

Would you buy such a contraption? I would, I would find it useful.

Or you can just use the diffuser made for the light. Same thing with better beam pattern.

There are plenty of cheap flashlight+lantern transforming combo lights.

Sounds rather like the H50 to me.

I Googled that and, yes it would be like that, but with a good throwing head. I don't want to mess with diffusers and may want to switch between the two or use the side light (at reduced power) with the main thrower light.

They could use the new small footprint Cree and a heat sink bracket to drain heat to the case of the light. it shouldn't take up much room.

John have you taken a look at McGizmo's site? Hes done some stuff like this. With luxeons though. Also flashlight reviews has some about mag led replacement bulbs, some of them use side emitters. A think a lot are very hard to get a hold of now. But it could give you an idea of what something like that might be like before you pull the trigger.

I used to have a flashlight where the front optic was on a sleeve, the lower half of which was clear. You could slide it "up" to expose the bulb for flood.
