Perhaps this thread has already been "run," but I am just so pleased with my new M60F that I had to post this. Please excuse my pictures - even a great camera can improve a poor user only so much.:(

Anyway, all the pictures were taken at F3.5 for 3 seconds. Brand new primary cells in both flashlights. My L4 is almost 2 years old and the M60F is, of course, brand new. I found the Malkoff to be waaaaay more than equal to the L4 AND it - the 6P combo - never got hot like the L4 did.

But you guys decide...YMMV

The two lights:

Towards my backyard, L4 first, then the 6P Malkoff:

Now towards the shed, same order:

And finally, inside the house, same order (though slightly OOF - not your eyes):

Nice. I too recently got an M60F for my Z2, and I have an L4. I did the same comparison first night and found the same--The M60F is waaaay more.

I've got the M60 in 6P + FM34 and would love to know if there is any point in me buying an M60F? As it stands I believe I've got a great combination of flood v throw in one package. However, if I'm loosing too many lumens from the M60 + FM34 combo v the the M60F on its own then I might consider ordering one.

As far as I know, the M60 has identical runtimes to the M60F. The M60LF is a different story and you will get three more hours over the M60 + FM34.

If you love your M60 but want more time, pick up the M60L and throw the FM34 on it - honestly, WITH the FM34 on, its hard for me to distinguish a big difference between the two, plus, you get an extra 3 hours of runtime with the M60L.

Flip off the FM34 and the difference in throw between the two becomes MUCH more apparent.

As far as beamshots, here is a good M60F VS. FM34 thread on that topic with awesome beamshots provided by Zven:

I wound up NOT getting an M60F - I have an M60 and M60L each with an FM34 for maximum flexibility - this has suited my needs perfectly. For my usage, I could not justify spending the $$ for such a specialized beam when the FM34 already gives me two lights in one.

Re: MY L4 vs MY 6P w/Malkoff M60F

In my own M60F vs. L4 comparisons I saw less difference between the lights than the great beamshots above, with the M60F having a bit more throw/hotspot, a bit wider flood, and a warmer tint. I just got the M60F but my L4 has a new KL4 LED module after I chipped the glass on my old one and it seems noticeably brighter. Maybe the newer L4's are bit "brighter" than the older ones?

Anyways, I carry the L4 daily and keep the M60F by my bedside. More for size reasons than anything else.

Dennis.

Your observations about the "old" vs the "new" L4 could be spot on - which is why I put in my OP that my L4 was almost 2 years old.

Don't get me wrong...I love my L4. It's just that for about half the cost, one can have the proven capabilities of a SF body and add the Malkoff M60F and have essentially, albeit bigger, the same light as an L4. This, of course, is a testament to that which Gene has produced.:twothumbs

Anyone for beamshots of my M60F vs the M60??

Re: MY L4 vs MY 6P w/Malkoff M60F

You betcha, bring on the beamshots! I was kicking myself a bit when I bought my M60 and the M60F was announced a week later. Thanks for the L4 comparison shots cuz that's what I was really waiting for. The L4 was one of my favorite lights due to the output and beam pattern, and while the M60's flood is okay it's definately no L4. It sure does throw, but I wonder if the difference in throw is worth the utility of a flood beam at close ranges.

Sorry it took so long to get these here. Same camera as before and same settings (F3.5 @ 3 seconds).

The location is the same...my backyard.

Don't let the white background fool you because of my small pictures...both of these lights are VERY bright.:grin2:

M60F first, M60 second:

well, I do remember the time when surefire changed its ratings on the KL4 from 65 lumens to 100 lumens...And then later I got word [which confirms my own experiences] that older KL4s can take 1xcr123a and runs longer than newer KL4 heads on single cr123As.

So yeah, Maybe the newer L4's are bit "brighter" than the older ones

Interesting beamshots. Oddly enough it makes it look like the M60 both throws farther and has more light outside the hotspot than the M60F. Can you comment on how they looked in person? Sometimes real life and pictures don't agree with each other, as I recall the L4's flood to be much wider than the M60.

Well, I went back and looked at the photos and then I went outside tonight and retook some new shots...

The M60 does have more of a central hotspot and its spill is very good for the light itself, but in person, the M60F does have much more spill. To my eyes, it appears slightly less bright but much more...floody. Perhaps viewing from a distance does the M60F a disservice because it is not geared towards throwing. I think the SF L4 would look somewhat weak as well when compared to a thrower like the M60. Plus, my pictures are not taking exactly what I see...

The thing is, I'm glad that I bought both the M60 and the M60F because I will use them in different situations - the M60 stays at my bedside and the M60F stays in my vehicle.

Anyway, here are the pictures that I took just now of the front of my house...I have used the bigger photos to try to show a better picture.

M60F first, then the M60:
