I am wanting to mod a 3d Mag with a 1 watt Ls.
I have been reading CPF and other net sources
and have found that I would need anywhere from
1 to 5 ohms resistance for this setup.
I would like to overdrive somewhat but I don't
want to greatly reduce the life of the Led.
I know that proper heatsinking is important for
this kind of mod. So what do you guys suggest for
a resistor value for this mod?

well, i don't use resistance in my 3d mods...

as long as the heatsinking is adaquate, even dd off of 3d's should still result in a led that will outlive you /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

i blew 6 1 watt luxeons in a row with direct drive on a 3D, i had more then sufficient heatsinking and probably gave it too much current from the 18-20 guage wire i was using

I think some resistance should be used, since you can't count on batteries all having the same amount of internal resistance or the same voltage. What happens if someone drops in NiMH cells?

For your 3D (4.5v) LS mod, you should use a ~1.8 ohm resistor for overdriving at 600mA or ~2.2 ohm resistor for 500mA. You should use a 5w resistor instead of a 1w if you have one handy.

Thanks Abe
