I bought one of their "Simulated Laser Kits" right around 1980 straight from the back pages of some electronics magazine. The thing used a 4-AA holder, a circuit that used a 555 timer IC, a couple of transistors, and tantalum cap to pulse a Fairchild FLV-104 LED at half an amp, a two piece telescoping metal tube, and a long focal length lens to focus the LED's already narrow beam into a tiny spot on the wall or whatever you shot it at. There was a pot on the tailpiece you could use to adjust the pulse rep rate.
I wish they still had those. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif
After I managed to blow up the LED, I got a "real" laser - a ML-800 HeNe (a whopping 0.5mW) from Metrologic Instruments. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
