I am looking at getting a netbook for my work & after transferring all of my data across I would like to try Ubuntu Linux on my Toshiba Laptop.

Does any one have any experience with installing Linux onto Toshiba laptops or knows where I can find a step by step guide.

I have a Toshiba Satellite 1800 Series

Model no PS181A-009S9
Processor - Intell Celeron 800Mhz
Ram - 183.44Mb
HDD - 9.35Gb
Modem - 56Kb
Currently running Win ME

It looks like a slightly different variant of the 1800 series but maybe a good place to start. A quick search showed video issues with the latest version of Ubuntu on the Toshiba 1800 series that someone worked around by copying something from the 7.10 release installed in the link above. Good luck.

Try installing the Ubuntu Live CD. That way you can try the OS before you actually install it. Or with Ubuntu 8.04 you can install it along with your Windows OS and have a dual boot system. Not sure at the moment if your specs are up to par to run that version of Ubuntu. There are alot of lite versions of Linux. I have found a lot of info here also.

Ubuntuforums is a good place to start.
