Can anyone give detailed instructions on KL3 head disassembly?
The head seem to have a optic retaining ring with six notches around the inside . It would appear there is some kind of thread locking compound on it.
I understand that heat and some sort of strap wrench is the way to go but can anyone be more specific or provide pictures? is there a tool that will work on this ring that wont damage it? What type of heat is best? Boil, heat gun, torch ,microwave ,Toaster oven...

Thanks in adavnce

From the sounds of it, you have a gen. 1 KL3? Ribbed style?

Try a heatgun to heat the outside bezel around the top, next use a pair of needle-nose pliers and open them up into the notches.....and turn applying downward force so the needle-nose don't come out of the grooves!...hopefully it unscrews.

In preparation, I usually use a piece of 2X4 with a hole cut slightly smaller than the diameter of the bezel. I then put the bezel between the 2 halves and insert that into a vise to allow both hands to be used.

Try first without heat.
If you can not open the bezel then use hair dryer.
