Flashlight porn... [photo heavy]

Finally got my Canon 1Ds back and i happened to have just installed trits in two out of three Arc6 sleeves, so i decided to... erm... celebrate by shooting some flashlight porn. Haven't done any product photography in quite a while and these were lit by two LCD screens, a ceiling light and a cell phone, so bear with me











(To mods: if you think this thread was misplaced and should've been placed in the Arc6 subforum, my kindest apologies. Please move it there. I was hoping other people would continue the thread with photos of other lights)

Sweet lights....sweet pics. Now I want one of them....

Super lights and super camera too!:thumbsup: (Though I think the ISO is set too high).

Took most of them in near dark at 1000+ ISO and couldn't be bothered to pull them through a noise filter.

PS: There's just one light in the photos. The "extra parts" are just battery/piston sleeves.

What were your settings? Did you use a tripod?

Yeah, for all of them except the first one.

ISO 1000-ish, i believe, EF 100mm Macro lens, f/2.8-14 depending on the shot, shutter speed 1/40 to 40 s. Most of them were terribly underexposed (wasn't paying my full attention while i was playing with the light) so i had to pull them quite a few EV's up. That + liberal amounts of sharpening - noise reduction = a lot of noise

I like them. Sometimes the grain you get with higher ISO's actually adds to the photo -- almost making it warmer and/or more film-like. Sometimes soft is good -- as with some wedding shots and portraits.

you must have a pretty fast lens. what lens did you use? What ISO, f/stop, exposure etc?

that old 1ds produces pretty nice images, even at 1000iso
they look pretty close to what my slightly newer 1dmk2n could do at that ISO

Like i wrote above, EF 100mm Macro (f/2.8). A lot of these were taken at very long exposures to get the trits to show up nicely (few tens - not tenths - of seconds).

1Ds Mark II...

Took a while to trade up to it (through a 20D, 5D). I've lucked out about a year ago, when a friend of mine (commercial photographer) decided to buy the Mark III. Asked him if he would be willing to sell his pampered, never-left-the-studio Mark II and he agreed, so i got it for less than half the price a new one used to cost. He was even nice enough to include a spare battery and DC coupler.

1Ds Mark II, sorry, not the old 1Ds.
The noise is actually quite managable and doesn't really need any cleaning up to ISO 1250, but it got quite noticeable in these because i underexposed a lot of them and had to push the EV up considerably in the RAW converter.

Now that is a great looking flashlight. If it cost about $100 less, I'd get a couple.

I picked up a 1Ds mark III in feburary but I really need to invest in a macro lens. I can't get good shots of my lights with a 24-70mm or even the 85mm F1.2.

Seriously, though, buy the 100mm macro. It's an awesome value for money.
Crazy sharp, awesome bokeh and works great as a portrait lens as well!

Do they still come with that coke-bottle-bottom kit lens?

The EF 85 f1.8 is nice. It has very nice bokeh and is sharp at all apertures. A great portrait/availible light lens. The EF 50 f1.8 is a must have lens also but is pretty soft wide open. The EF28-105 f3.5-4.5 is a pretty nice "affordable" zoom lens.
