When I tested my 2 AA and 2AAA minimags after installing SMJLEDs they ran right arond 30 hours on a set of batteries if memory serves me right. Will look it up and see for sure, will upate it if wrong.

Instead of throwing my old Mini mags(I hate to throw away lights..)I bought one SMJLED set for my orange one. The amount of light isn´t that great but I guess it has a decent runtime.

My kids like to play with it..

It´s well worth the money.

I like to see lights that are used and not shelf queens!:D

When I see these old, beaten, minimags I always wonder how many of the "modern" lights are actually as robust and will keep on going for tens of years.

Maybe only Surefire and Peak? Who knows... at least the minimags are already proven.

Kind regards,

I agree, I didn't have very good reliability from digitally controlled multi-level lights.
My EDC is: Surefire 9P with Malkoff when you need a wall of lite and probably MiniMag 2aa with a mod such as SMJLED for good runtime.

I've got 3 Minimag 2xAA lights. Two of them currently have the Nite-Ize 1 watt upgrades and the other has the Nite-Ize 3-LED upgrade. I think they are great.

Sure they do not meet the expectations of some, but I'm a frugal flashaholic and these lights do what I need them to do.

I plan on getting SMJ or TerraLux upgrades for them to see how I like those.

I have several of the Sandwich Shoppe version,
which i purchased in early 2007.

Note: i am NOT talking about a bare SMJLED LED.

Even on plain ol' Alkalines, these will last a full day.

At that point, it is STILL giving a light level
about equal to an incand. Mini-Maglite.

(the module is not current regulated, so brightness dims during use)

Certainly an interesting little gem, and worth a try.

Vastly superior to the dim, boring Nite-Ize 3-LED upgrade modules,
which are available everywhere for ~ 5 dollars.

However, these hafta' be mail-ordered, and
they DO cost twice as much.

I give 'em a

Hello Badger_Girl --

Welcome to CandlePowerForums !

:welcome:

To answer yer question . . . .

The TerraLux TLE-5EX has LOTS more output
than the SMJLED modules.

After all, the TLE-5EX is using (currently) a Cree XR-E emitter,
rather than the "much simpler" SMJLED emitter.

The TerraLux model costs significantly more,
and (naturally) gives much higher performance.

I have 'em both.

And i LIKE them both !

The TLE-5EX gives BRIGHT LIGHT for a couple of hours.

The SMJLED module gives GOOD LIGHT for perhaps 24 hours.

Both upgrade modules have their place in my collection.

Only you can decide which one to buy first. :)

BTW, you can't go wrong with either one.

You'll still have a Greatly Improved mini-maglite !

Hope this is helpful to you.

The link in Post # 9 is for a "bare" SMJLED.

The link in my post (# 10) is for a SMJLED "module",

which has (forgive me for getting too technical) :)

- Electronic Guts -

housed inside a slim, dime-sized metal canister.

Hope this answers yer' question.

I thought that was just a spacer/heatsink...
What's actually inside? Aren't both the bare SMJLED and SMJLED "module" unregulated?

Edit: I noticed that Sandwich shoppe's description mentioned that the plugin module is "bi-pin"..so at least it has diode's inside, but does it do anything else like boost the output or regulate it?

IIRC its just polarity protection, although I would like to see somebody confirm this!

Must be a boost circuit, otherwise there's no point since bare LED isn't damaged by reverse polarity.

I would like to know how much more output it gives than the bare LED version, which is dimmer than stock incan to my eyes, and very very blue.
