Solitare mod questions

Ah first post, you poor patrons of this wonderful forum will now have to put up with me :devil:. I'm thinking of upgrading a solitare and was looking at my options for leds. I have several questions what is the MCD? How does it affect the light. ex. what is the difference between 7000 mcd and 5000 mcd? (Sorry if i'm asking a completely ridiculous and/or stupid question.) This LED i'm looking at seems to have three pins. I know one is positive and one negative but what is the third one? Can i just snip it off? It says this LED can run 3.6v. Does the solitare have a resistor, so if i used one of those little batteries that are 12v, i wouldn't blow myself, the led, and all the neithboring chicken coop?
