My house has many MR16 light fittings, and they are drawing lots of energy. The house has about 100 of them, and at 5,000 hour ratings, I replace one on average every 50 hours of on time. Which is annoying me. :scowl:
I would like to replace them all with a LED MR16 fitting of my own design. Given that we want a total room flood, I was thinking a naked MCE or P7 emitter running at 2.5A. According to the link below, a P7 running 2.5A puts out about 700lm.

As an example, my room has 8 MR16 sockets, and is about 4m x 4m in size. If I had 8 warm white MCEs running at 2.5A each with no focusing optics, can anyone tell me how that would compare to having 20W xenon bulbs in there? How about 50W halogens? Is my idea of using the emitters with no optics a good one, or should I put some kind of reflector in there?
Also, am I wasting my time building this myself? Would just buying an off the shelf unit like this one be better?

At $50 a piece that's a very expensive home upgrade given the number I have to do. Also, off the shelf is no fun for the modder in me
