so, how is it that GE gets the www.led.com domain when they seem to be nowhere near the market leaders of the LED industry? Just thought that was funky. Maybe they are planning on increasing their LED sector.

Whomever registers the domain name first or pays the most for it, wins.

Yeah, to do otherwise would require ICANN to review every request for a domain name to see if the person/company trying to register it was a "market leader," which has no objective definition. This would be an unworkable policy.

GE was smart to register this name even if they aren't a market leader. Registration is cheap and even if they don't use the domain they can sell the domain name to the highest bidder...

In fact, some people make a living registering domain names then selling to the highest bidder.

This system is best and is an excellent example of the free market at work. Lord knows we don't want the government doling out domain names as they see fit. It would take foreeeeeeever to get a domain name and once you got it, it might not be the one you wanted. In the free market you can have any domain name you want, assuming you are willing to pay what it costs. Everything is negotiable, you could even buy www.microsoft.com if you could pony up enough dough to make Microsoft think it is in their advantage to sell.
