I'm running it on one RCR 123 (protected). The label on the light indicates that it was designed for 1 x 17670, but I got the light directly from Milky in its present 1 x 123 cell configuration. I think the answer to the question is that the light runs on one 3.7v li ion cell of any size, 123, 17670 or 18650. What you get with the larger batteries is longer runtime.
