Putting an XP-E in the Sapphire is much easier to do than modding it to fit a High CRI P4 as there's no boring of the head. The XP-E
is much smaller.

I started with a 5mm nichia Arc pill and ground off the top portion of the
5mm led. Then Drilled a hole down thru it. Wired it up thru the hollowed
led...siliconed the XP-E in place and then trimmed the corners, so it wont
short inside the sapphire head. no metal heatsinking is required at these current levels.

cut and drilled 5mm led. i use kynar wire.(used for wire wrapping circuits)

overall size is the same. This keeps the xpe up front in the sapphire head
for maximum output. If u can tell, it's now glued in place.

nicely centered..and allows the use of the original oring around the 5mm led
to hold the pill in place.

couple beam shots. all flood, no hotspot.

neutral white color is :)

I do prefer the High CRI P4 and it will stay in the sapphire, it has a little more red in the beam
which probably why the CRI is higher. nothing wrong with the neutral white xpe though..
it's a pretty easy mod.

Very nice work. I love the colour. Would you offer this modding service and if you did, how much would you charge?

+1 If a modding service was made I would have to buy another Sapphire for sure!

Either way, great modding none the less.

it's actually hard to estimate because i cant compare it to lights that
have a hotspot. It's bright enought that you dont want to look at the led.
so it has to be at least above 10 lumens. and if you stick the light
over your ear, you can easily read a book in bed without blinding yourself.

it would turn the light into an indoor only light, or dark trail usage with little
to no ambient, awesome in the car at night. you lose all throw being a mule,
but it will provide a nice glow to an entire room in the dark. great for
bathroom runs and sneaking around the house. the leds are [email protected]
we are driving them at 55-60mah nimh, so 13-15lumens is probably a good
ballpark. 80+mah on lithium AAA 17 lumens? cool white R2 XP-E's are a bit
brighter at 114lm/350mah.

digikey has a nice source of 4300K neutral white xp-e 3.2v for $7+shipping.
they also have cool white xp-e R2's vf 3.9v for $13

I thought long and hard about a modding service and right now i dont want
to step on Don's toes as he must be very close to releasing his high cri neutral
white offerings. I have no doubt that he would stilll sell every single peice,
but i'd still feel weird. maybe after this upcoming wave.
