How bright can a 5watt Lux be pushed on two 123\'s

How bright can a 5watt Lux be pushed on two 123's:

If all the stops were pulled out, how bright could a specially selected 5watt led be made to be with only two 123's?
Would a step up be involved?
Does a Sandwich exist for this job?

No consideration to battery life.
No consideration to thermal shutdown.
Consideration to blowing the circuit or led.

Looks like you're talking about pairing a BB700 or BB750 to 2CR123s...

Ahh, I see UFO beat me to it...

I'm going to see if I can pot one in a McLux body and EN head...

I see, then the light might be able to be built not using a sandwich then. would heat be a problem if this light was not to be used more than 20 seconds at a time.

You could use a powerpuck instead of a sandwich, but it wouldn't fit in a real small light.

Main issue is how much power can you get out of the cells. Also, what do you mean by runtime doesn't matter? Is 2 seconds enough? If yes, maybe you can use a supercapacitor to get a 2 second light pulse. Then the battery would charge the capacitor, so you could get another 2 second pulse a few seconds later.

JonSidneyB: heat will be a problem, you will be doing inreversible damage to the luxeon. With my light and heatsink in picture above, the body of the whole light is "HOT" but holdable after less then 1 minute. The current 5W LS have a short enough lifespan as it is. The body of my light is a Rev. 2 of the Micronex-05 in picture

FalconFX: Heh i plan to do the same to my McLux head and 2x123 tube =), i found that potting it does a lot at transferring heat. I pot my lights with a 2 part (total) epoxy, 1 part artic alumina, 1 part glow powder mix. Maybe thats why my hand scorcher heats up in under a minute..

i think you are confusing sandwhiches and converter boards...

and sandwhich will drop into a mag 2aa, it has the led attached.
a board is just a board to drive the led. there is no led attached, you wire it to a ls which is planted elsewhere.

so the answer is yes...you can run a 5w with 2 123's...just not with a sandwhich /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

my sandwich will drop straight into a nexstar 2AA version, but it'll probably burn out if it weren't thermal epoxied to the body and potted....

The lights were made by someone else, but i put them together =\. Jon, you might considering shooting him a email about customs, he has the machinery and the skill, but might be lacking on time.

ufo...sorry...who was it I should shoot a line to. This light I was thinking of would only be used a few seconds at a time.

if you had a W BIN with a low Vf, that should be easily doable? should be doable with a V also i would guess. I doubt any of us would have a integrating sphere to test lumen output with.

For direct drive, you must have a really, really low Vf 5W Luxeon to get it to light up, and still have the output up that high... I've seen some few Ts (for Vf), but I doubt it'll work without some sort of boost...

McGizmo's already done quite a few 2x123 --> 5W LS mods, and I'm pretty sure all of them are over 100 lumens...

beats 100 lumens....great....65 lumens is what is stated as the threshold for a good tactical light. 100 lumens is good output for a small LED powered Light.
