On my last trip to China, I bought a HID flashlight. I think it is really a xenon light. There is no warmup delay, you can turn it off and back on instantly(it is not a good idea though,as it speeds up wear), and it is tough. The bulb is only slightly larger than a NE-2. After arriving back in the US, the flashlight was taken out of the damaged suitcase, and yes, it survived the rough handling. I don't think it is really HID because Craig says such lamps are fragile. My friend said he has taken one apart to fix it. I remember the circuit is very simple, and there is no regulation. He says the starter is just a simple oscillator.
