How many lumens is a Quark AA with 14500?

I am close to grabbing a Quark and have been searching for this info but can't find the answer. I have found some great comparative reviews, but they state the output as percentages vs other lights, not as actual lumens.

So I'm guesing that the answer 170 since that is what the 123 models put out which use the same head?

Also anyone know the runtime for this light on a 14500?

In case you didn't notice I am new here but have been lurking daily for about a month while this new obsession has been percolating. Now I'm about ready to start drinking, and probably going to have my first drink with a Quark!

The Quark low voltage head gives the same output on CR123 and LiIon, i.e. you are correct in using the specification for the Quark 123.

Welcome! You are correct...170 lumen. Runtime on turbo is 46 minutes. But probably not good to run it that far down...figure 30 minutes. If you look in the review area there is a thread that gives runtimes. The light does get somewhat hot on turbo too. Make me want to move it down to hi after a few minutes. Love the light.

14500 runtime should be slightly longer than the 16340 runtime

Marduke, why longer with 14500? At least AWs 16340 and 14500 cells seem to have the same capacity.

Another nice idea would be a Quark AA with a 2xCR123 tube and 17670

The way the cells are constructed you get a little bit lower internal resistance in 14500's, so you eek out a bit more performance under moderate loads.

I believe the information given above applies to the R2 edition of the Quark AA. I got the R5 edition and it is rated at 109 lumens max on a standard battery. What lumen output would this be on a 14500?

According to http://www.light-reviews.com/4sevens_quarkaa/ the QAA with XP-E is 176 lumens on Max for 47 min. to 50% with a 14500.

I don't believe that review is using the specs of the newer R5 edition. In his review, he notes that the advertised maximum output is 90 lumens and a quick look at the 4sevens website shows a maximum 109 lumens output on the Quark AA R5.

That is correct.

So you guys are saying the quark mini AA on 14500 will have a longer run time than the quark mini 123 on rcr123?? Both batteries AW branded with equal voltage.

In all my testing the 14500's have shown more capacity than 16340's.

Yet another reason to not bother with the 123 format.

Any regular or tactical Quark AA will have the same output on 14500 as the AA^2 models.

Does putting a 14500 in a Quark AA make it become direct drive?

No. They're regulated (Buck/Boost) from 0.9 to 4.2v, and most common battery configurations will fry the Quark AA at any higher voltage.

Edit: More properly, this is the "Low Voltage" head, ships with the Quark AA, AA^2, and 123.

I know the QMini 123 goes DD with IMR16340 at nearly 300 lumens.

Can the QMini AA handle a 14500?

The QMiNi AA and QMiNi 123 seem to have the same drive circuit. I'm ashamed that I shouted a lot at the person who showed me here. It's not warrantied, but people (other people than me) have gotten away with it. The thermal load on High is too much.

The MiNi AA will go into direct drive. I wouldn't expect yours to fry, but in theory a super-low Vf LED would let too much current through the inductor and kill it. And that's outside the warranty.

My last post was answering for the Quark AA, which is to me the proper title for the thing that legos with the other Quark parts and isn't the MiNi series.

For sure...the Quark AA on a 14500 is one bright little pocket light.

The AA and 123 use the same head so with the R5 and a 14500 the 4/7 website says 205 lumens.
