hi there,

I've been reading and checking out example pics of high CRI leds on the forum - some great info here!

Are nichia 083's the king of high CRI lights or should I be looking into other leds?

The only place where i've managed to source nichia 083's is this:

http://www.ledonline.co.uk/mr16-gx-base-38-0.htm

could i use that as a base for a video light? what else do I need? batteries in series? PWM dimmer? maybe a diffuser or a light guide (was thinking of a DIY ring light made out of fibre optic threads or microprismatic film)

Nichia offers the 083 in both "regular" as well as High CRI format. The difference is in the phosphors I believe. The higher flux 083 uses a single phosphor whereas the 083H1 uses two phosphors. I may not have that completely right but I want to caution that knowing that the LED is an 083 is no guarantee that it is a High CRI LED. If you can use a LED already mounted on a MCPCB, there is an offering for some of these in the McGizmo forum somewhere back there. I an not trying to solicit your business here and I admit up front that there are now better bins of the 083 in High CRI available and the custom MCPCB's I had made and mounted with the LED's was no bargin to me nor is it being offered up as any bargin.

For what it's worth, I have yet to sample another brand or style of LED that has faired better or even close to what I have seen of the 083 High CRI in my integrating sphere but I have not sampled all of the LED's or many of the latest ones being offered.
