What LED options do I have if I want to machine out a flashlight for 1000-1200 lumens? I'm thinking running twin 18650's either in series or parallel. Thoughts? Also is parallel or series dangerous? I read some other guy his 18650 blew up...

TIA!

1000 Lumen = 2 * quad-die led

2*18650 to power a quad at full (800 mA) --> 1600 mA draw

2 times this: 3.2 A
--> possible in theory, not recommended.
Same theoretical runtime as 1*18650 light with P7 / MC-E: 40-45 mins

PS: only theoretical "calculation", no real-world losses considered.

What's the brightest LED torch/flashlight you can buy ? I'm not too knowledgeable about electronics.

The brightest you can buy? Probably Elektrolumens' triple P7/MC-E mod or something similar (I haven't seen someone else building triple quad emitter mods... yet). If you're not looking for modded lights, I have no idea. Most likely a single P7 or MC-E light like the Fenix TK40.

You need one of these wired in series with 2*18650 also in series.

Alternatively wire in parallel and run off 3C NiMH. It is only 20mm longer. You will need 4500-6000 mAH cells, not those crappy Energizer 2500 mAH ones.

If you can put up with a slightly bigger light,

wired in parallel in a 3D Mag.
