I was not sure where to post this but as it is a homemade light I figured it was here .
And I just wanted to share .

I was wondering when messing around with leds and optics that there seemed to be a load if light that never gets out of the casing .
and also for biking with the light on the bars and pointing down the trail there is a dark spot all around the front wheel .

so putting 2 & 2 together I tried a housing that was open underneath and covered with clear lexan bent to fit

This is a sort of mark 2 version of a 6 XPE bike light I made last winter using the 10 mm Carclo optics and it has been a real beauty of a light

on to the results of the lumens captured inside the light I have taken some pics

first one is the light with the front blanked off with some matt black metal

second is the bottom of the light blacked out

and third is nothing blanked out and I was quite supprised at the result

Now this does work very well for a bike light and I wondered if it had a use in the flashlight world too

and now the out on the trail beam shots on low and hi

What current are those XP-E'd being driven at? That light seems very bright, but has a low profile design. What sort of battery pack/runtime does it have?

Now that IS a light you could safely 'mountain bike' through the forest with!

As mentioned above... curious about power source/capacity etc.

Cheers Guys
I thought I should have put up a few more details but was excited about the results .

It has Six of the XPE R2 leds in series
with a mixture of the 10 mm optics
4 medium frosted and 2 eliptical to give a floody beam for on the bars .

( to give around the 1100 lumens mark in theory and when the XPGs arrive up around 2000 lms )

powered by a Maxflex @ 700ma from a 14.8 Li Ion 3600 mah pack
and on full power as in the pics it draws just under 1000ma

It also has a helmet mounted version but without the clear bottom to the led compartment and 6 of the narrow optics for a long range beam

I am also in the process of building this beasty with 12 XPEs on board .

It will get out eventually, after a while. Until then, it just bounces around inside quite a lot, gradually getting weaker. But sooner or later it finds a way out, although by then it is usually degraded to the extent that you will be able to observe the Weak Lumens effect.

Great job Mr Trout - i know a guy who wants something like that but coming out the sides.

Excellent theory on where the lumens go
DM51 - i always wondered :)
