Stunning pictures. They're all incredible but the reflections in the water from the sea-horse are really special.

I am a saltwater reef fish enthusiast and have always had them for pets. It's so cool to see them in the wild though!! Something I've never had the opportunity to do.

    Hi guys,
Last week I came across a critter known as a short-arm sand octopus. I have only encountered one of these once before and it was about a year ago in the same area which I call the seahorse pasture. As with the encounter last year, it turned out that there were two of these critters and I presume in both cases they were a mating pair but I have no evidence to support this. What's kind of cool about them is that at least one of them uses gathered rocks and shell and coral pieces to make a display in front of their hidey hole and further, they will actually grab onto some of these and pull them over them to cover themselves when threatened.

The first day I encountered the octopus. I coaxed it out of its hole and got some shots of it outside as well as returning to its hole and grabbing some goodies for covering itself up.

That night, I decided I would go out the next day and see if the octopus was still in the same spot and I wanted to bring it some sort of gift that it could use in its hide. In considering that it gathered stuff for use in piling up a protective barrier as well as possibly in showing its mate how clever it was, I wanted to provide it with an effective tool or device that would provide for an excellent cover. I wanted to stick with something organic so I decided that an Opihi shell would be perfect. The Opihi is a limpet and the shell is an elliptical, domed shape that would seem to be a perfect cover to pull over the top to cover the octopus while easy to hold with its suction cups on the smooth interior of the shell.

I took one out with me and sure enough the octopus was in its hole and partially covered up.

I put the Opihi shell down on the octopus and it immediately sucked into the hole. I could see the shell moving about on the top of the pile and figured the octopus was getting a feel for it. Ultimately I ended up pulling all of its goodies away from it including the Opihi shell and placed them on the sand in reach but now the octopus had to gather them back as it saw fit. I had a video camera on a tripod next to the location to capture the action and after I moved away you can see in the video that the octopus ended up grabbing the Opihi shell first, even though it had to completely exit its safety and then it went back into the hole and tested the shell for service. It ultimately retrieved about half of its rubble pieces but the Opihi shell was its primary shield and cover.

It was really cool to anticipate a gift or tool for this critter and then get confirmation that it was used and deployed just as I had imagined it could be.

Cool. They are very good at camouflaging themselves. And protecting themselves. I am surprised at how small the octopus is.

    Hi Don,
You never cease to amaze me with your videos and photography. This little short-arm octopus is nothing short of an amazing intelligent creature and a clever builder. I have read that the octopus is a very intelligent animal and this proves it all the more.
    Thank you,
    Jeff

I've been thinking about a McGizmo Haiku for a while now, and finally picked one up on the secondary market to try. It makes it even cooler that Don actually lives just 30 minutes away (by plane) in Maui. I had no idea until now that one of the world's most renowned flashlight builders lived right here in the Islands. Great pictures.

Well it's been whale season now and the first were seen a few months ago indicating perhaps an early season but just recently multiple pods are being noticed and more people having encounters out there. I've ben out on a boat now once and a couple days ago paddled out on my wave ski with camera and mask & fins.

Winter is a time for whales and waves over here and so far it looks like it's shaping up to be a fun winter.

    Mahalo Don,
I hope you are well and life is treating you well in paradise.
I'm doing OK and no evidence of any cancer. I go for my scans next Tuesday and I pray for another batch of clear scans.

Beautiful pics as always. I really like how mama whale in the last picture has her eye on you how cool is that.
Hard to believe that another "Hawaiian Winter" is there. Your winter and my winter are vastly different my temperature at 8:00 A.M. this morning was -2.2º. I see your temps for today are 75º-80º. Pretty nice, albeit you may have rain, but that is better than snow that we have had an abundance of as of late.

Thanks again for the beautiful pics,

    Jeff

Be well Jeff! Yeah, watching this mom and calf swim by me and making eye contact with both of them in the process was a real moving experience. They are so large and smooth in movement as they pass by it's difficult not to feel some sort of connection with them; the lights are on and someone is definitely home.
