Hi guys, before I moved to Maui, this was the time of year I took my annual vacation and fell off the radar while putting in as much water time as possible. Now that I live here every day is part work and part vacation but this time of year I must admit the focus is less on work. If I am a bit slow in response time, that would be my excuse. Below are some more images of my reason for being a bit absent...

When the conditions are favorable and permit going out to visit these visiting whales I hope you can understand where my selfish priorities lie.

Keep living the dream and giving us vicarious pleasure (and envy) Don!
I can only imagine the pleasure that you must experience in the water seeing these marvellous sights.

    Don,
Spectacular as usual. I love the second shot down with the beautiful eye probably gazing at you. With that said the shots with the calf are wonderful also.
Thank you for sharing your paradise with us.
    Best,
    Jeff

Don, my brother-in-law just got back from Maui this weekend, and he had some pictures of the humpbacks. Momma and a calf. Not as stunning as yours, of course, but it made me think of you and check this thread.
Hope all is well and you are enjoying the fabulous HI winter.
Looking forward to more pics when you make it back to civilization.

Those are such incredible animals. Is it frightening to be so close? Though they seem gentle I imagine they could inadvertantly do some real damage!

Absolutely beautiful pictures Don! I especially like the close-ups where you get a really good view of their eyes.

    Amazing photos.
We have booked for next January for our annual Maui retreat.
Don, do you offer "tours" ?

My plan for this January was to SUP out & watch the whales, but the swells those 2 weeks were crazy. Over at Jaws, it was insane seeing what was coming in. The storm cancelled the surf competition, but guys were still riding those giant waves.

    Wow those are amazing pictures!
I would probably be quite anxious if I were in the water with them as they look enormous!

    Hi guys,
I have been pretty remiss in not keeping up to date here. In April, A friend and I had an encounter with a mom and calf that lasted for about an hour and a half. I won't bog this down with a bunch more shots but will add one of the calf:

This summer, for what ever reason, all kinds of baby fish have shown up on the reef which is very promising. There have also been some cool encounters with larger fish and some monk seals.

Above and below, an old straight 6 engine block serves as shelter for a mixed batch of juvenile fish.

There is a fish that is endemic to Hawaii called the Hawaiian fantail filefish which I have only seen a couple of in previous years but this year like the pennant butterfly fish in above shot, the fantails are al over the place:

One night I went out with some friends who are marine science nurds (Scripps PhD students and local marine biologists) to witness the rice coral spawn. The majority of the lights used were some of my AquaMules and an AquaRam. Below are a couple screen grabs from a Sony video I took of the event. They are primarily lighted by a High CRI AquaMule. Not great resolution but still pretty cool I think.

In the screen grab below, you can see a Royal Blue AquaMule illuminating the water just beyond the coral in the foreground. One of the gang was using it to check on the fluorescence of the coral.

In in this last image of the series, you can see the coral gametes as little white spheres being released from the coral. In the right hand side, the water is filled with plankton critters which were swarming and feeding on the gametes.

Yes, guess where some of the lighting equipment comes from.

    Hi guys,
I figure I should add a few more images from the last quarter of last year:

above and below is a diamond squid. Never heard of them before and they are rarely seen by divers. This one was likely near its end of life and very lethargic. Very big!!!

The whales are back now and I have been out a few times on my small RHIB to visit them. I have added a Phantom Quadcopter to my photo quiver and can now ger a viewpoint I have never enjoyed before.

Still like the proximity and underwater view though.
